United Icons: Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes is one of Manchester United's greatest-ever midfielders

Paul Scholes

He was part of the Class of 92.

His first team debut came in September 1994, where he scored both goals in a 2–1 win away at Port Vale in the League Cup. The strange thing about that match was United and Sir Alex Ferguson were heavily criticised for playing a weakened team. The debate even reached MP's. Who would have known that one of the best ever English midfielders was making his debut that day?

His league debut came three days later against Ipswich Town at Portman Road, a game in which United lost 3-2 but Scholes scored a consolation goal.

The 1994/1995 season was a good debut campaign for Scholes, but they finished the season without a trophy. The 1995/1996 season was then a success for the club and Scholes. He scored 14 goals in 31 appearances.

The Treble

A few years later, Scholes was a key player in Manchester United's treble success. He scored one of Manchester United's two goals against Newcastle in the FA Cup final. He also scored a crucial away goal against Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-final. There was some disappointment for him. A yellow card in the Champions League Semi-final second leg ruled him out of the eventual victory over Bayern Munich.

The final ten years of his career

Scholes netted a career-high 20 goals in all competitions in the 2002–03 season, including a hat-trick in a 6–2 win against Newcastle. He played a part in United regaining the Premier League after losing 'their trophy' to Arsenal in the previous season.

The following season saw United lose the title again but win the FA Cup. Scholes scored the winning goal in the 2003–04 FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal and played in the final that United won 3–0 against Millwall, his last FA Cup winners medal. He also played in the 2005 FA Cup Final but United lost. He saw his penalty saved by Jens Lehmann as they lost to Arsenal in a penalty shootout.

Over the final few seasons of his career, Scholes scored less goals but United were still successful. They won the Premier League in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011. They also won the Champions League in 2008. In 2011, Scholes actually announced his retirement but returned in January 2012 and played a small part in his boyhood club reclaiming the Premier League in 2013. He retired a few days later.

United Review: Reds bounce back from Liverpool humiliation

Manchester United 4 - 1 Real Betis Manchester United beat Real Betis 4-1 in the first leg of the Europa League Round-of-16 clash. Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for the Reds in the sixth minute, with a rifling strike that emphatically flew past Claudio Bravo. Despite an excellent start by United, our goal would be cancelled out just after the half-hour mark due to the on-loan Ayoze Perez firing across David De Gea into the bottom corner.  Erik's reds prove too strong Antony restored United's lead with a trademark effort that curled beyond a stranded Bravo, who could only watch as it hit the top corner. Minutes later, Bruno Fernandes got in on the act from Luke Shaw's corner. Our no.8 wasn't picked up as he wandered into the area to make it 3-1 on the night.  The final goal fell to Wout Weghorst, scoring his first in front of the Old Trafford faithful. Second-half substitute Facundo Pellistri was at the heart of the move, originally teeing up Scott McTominay whose s

His countryman Jadon Sancho, who was introduced as a substitute, completed the scoring shortly after the hour mark. United's Dalot had missed a great chance when it was only 1-0. Rashford on fire. Is he the best player in the world? For Rashford, the brace increased his goals tally this season to 24 in all competitions – the most he has ever managed for the club in a single campaign. United Review: Man United win first trophy since 2017.

Manchester United 2 - 0 Newcastle United Manchester United beat Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium. Casemiro’s header opened the scoring midway through the first half. Marcus Rashford then doubled Man United's lead with a shot that took a deflection off Newcastle's Sven Botman. Newcastle did test David De Gea’s goal during the second half. However, the reds managed to claim victory in London and would have extended the lead but for Loris Karius's heroics.  Erik ten Hag has now picked up his first piece of silverware as United manager.
