The news of Eric Cantona's impending transfer from Leeds to fierce rivals Manchester United was met with hostility from Leeds fans.

However, the transfer was seen as a good piece of business by most football experts. The Yorkshire club had removed a troubled player from their side and got decent money for him even though he played a part in them winning the league during the previous season.

Eric The King

Cantona made his first appearance for the club on 1 December 1992 in a friendly match against Benfica in Lisbon to mark Eusébio's 50th birthday, wearing the number 10 shirt.

Eric made his competitive debut as a second-half substitute against Manchester City at Old Trafford on 6 December.

United only lost on two occasions in the 92/93 season after his arrival. They finished the season 10 points clear at the top of the table, finishing as champions for the first time in 26 years

The spark that lit the fuse

Following the conclusion of the 92/93 season, United would go onto dominate the Premier League for the next 20 years up until Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Cantona was often seen as the catalyst for United's future success. There was some controversial moments though. Who remembers this?

Cantona eventually retired at the end of the 96/97 season. He won 4 Premier League titles and the Fa Cup twice. His name is still sung by fans of Manchester United.

On the 12th day of Christmas...

Why do Man United fans still love him?

We spoke with several Manchester United fans, asking why they still sing his name.

One said: "He just had a charisma that made everyone (men and women) fall in love with him immediately."

Another said: "Very few United players have had this impact in reality. Many players have scored more goals but hardly any have managed to lift the club like he did during the 92/93 season. The same thing happened during the 95/96 Double winning season."

Inducted into Premier League Hall of Fame

In May 2021, Cantona was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame. He played a huge part in the Premier League's development during the 1990s so this was well deserved.

He focused his later career mostly as an actor, having had his first role as a rugby player in Le bonheur est dans le pré, shot during his 1995 suspension. In the late 1990s, he accepted a role as a French ambassador in the English film Elizabeth.

In 2002, he directed a short film, Apporte-moi ton amour. He guest-starred as a mysterious barroom philosopher in independent British film Jack Says, released to DVD in September 2008. He co-starred as director Thierry Grimandi in French Film, and is co-producer and a lead actor in Ken Loach's Palme D'or nominated film Looking for Eric (2009). This film featured a number of Manchester United fans and iconic moments alongside some important social commentary.

United Review: Reds bounce back from Liverpool humiliation

Manchester United 4 - 1 Real Betis Manchester United beat Real Betis 4-1 in the first leg of the Europa League Round-of-16 clash. Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for the Reds in the sixth minute, with a rifling strike that emphatically flew past Claudio Bravo. Despite an excellent start by United, our goal would be cancelled out just after the half-hour mark due to the on-loan Ayoze Perez firing across David De Gea into the bottom corner.  Erik's reds prove too strong Antony restored United's lead with a trademark effort that curled beyond a stranded Bravo, who could only watch as it hit the top corner. Minutes later, Bruno Fernandes got in on the act from Luke Shaw's corner. Our no.8 wasn't picked up as he wandered into the area to make it 3-1 on the night.  The final goal fell to Wout Weghorst, scoring his first in front of the Old Trafford faithful. Second-half substitute Facundo Pellistri was at the heart of the move, originally teeing up Scott McTominay whose s

United Review: Title charge on?

Manchester United 3 - 0 Leicester City Manchester United defeated Leicester City 3-0 at Old Trafford to move within five points of the top of Premier League leaders Arsenal Marcus Rashford scored with the Reds’ first shot of the match in the first half, before he added to his tally with another strike following half-time. His countryman Jadon Sancho, who was introduced as a substitute, completed the scoring shortly after the hour mark. United's Dalot had missed a great chance when it was only 1-0. Rashford on fire. Is he the best player in the world? For Rashford, the brace increased his goals tally this season to 24 in all competitions – the most he has ever managed for the club in a single campaign. United Review: Man United win first trophy since 2017.

Manchester United 2 - 0 Newcastle United Manchester United beat Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium. Casemiro’s header opened the scoring midway through the first half. Marcus Rashford then doubled Man United's lead with a shot that took a deflection off Newcastle's Sven Botman. Newcastle did test David De Gea’s goal during the second half. However, the reds managed to claim victory in London and would have extended the lead but for Loris Karius's heroics.  Erik ten Hag has now picked up his first piece of silverware as United manager.
